Passport to Paint

Mapping Personal Geography through Visual Storytelling

In an increasingly globalised world, students in the UAE—a hub of "Third Culture" identities—frequently navigate multiple cultural landscapes. Passport to Paint is a 60-minute immersive workshop led by multidisciplinary artist Vern Brown. Drawing on his lived experience between the U.S. and the UAE, Vern guides students through the process of "mapping" their own identities using textured layering, bold symbolism, and vibrant colour palettes.

Alignment with UAE Inspection Frameworks

1. Personal and Social Development (Irtiqaa & KHDA) * Global Awareness & UAE Culture:

The workshop fosters a deep appreciation for the UAE’s role as a cultural crossroads. Students explore how their personal narratives intersect with the local heritage and the wider world, promoting "Global Citizenship."

Well-being & Resilience: By focusing on Vern’s themes of transformation and joy, the session provides a safe, creative outlet for self-expression, supporting the KHDA’s focus on student emotional well-being and "Positive Education."

2. Innovation and Creative Thinking * Critical Thinking:

Students are challenged to translate abstract concepts (identity, resilience, home) into visual symbols, aligning with framework requirements for "Innovation" and "Problem Solving" in the curriculum.

Technical Skill: Participants will experiment with Vern’s signature textured layering techniques, moving beyond standard painting to create multi-dimensional works.

3. Social Responsibility & Values * The workshop encourages students to reflect on their journey and the stories of those around them, fostering a culture of empathy and respect within the school community.

The Workshop Experience (60 Minutes)

00–10 min: The Narrative Spark. Vern shares his journey of navigating life between the U.S. and the UAE, introducing the concept of "Personal Geography."

10–20 min: Symbolic Mapping. Students identify 3–4 core symbols or colors that represent their heritage, current home (UAE), and future aspirations.

20–50 min: Immersive Creation. Utilizing a "Bold & Layered" approach, students build their "Visual Passport." Vern provides one-on-one mentorship, teaching students how to use texture to represent the "depth" of their personal history.

50–60 min: Reflection. A short "Gallery Walk" where students share one element of their piece, building confidence in public speaking and artistic critique.

Logistics & Investment

To ensure a high-impact, low-friction experience for the school’s Art Department, the artist provides a "turn-key" solution:

Materials: Provided entirely by the artist. This includes professional-grade acrylics, textured mediums, canvases/heavy-duty paper, and specialized tools.

Class Size: Optimized for 15 to 20 students per session to ensure personalized mentorship and high-quality output.

Duration: 60 minutes per session (easily adaptable to school period timings).

Space Required: Standard Art Room or flexible Maker Space.

Outcomes

Each student will leave with a completed Identity Canvas and a refreshed perspective on how their unique cultural background is a source of strength (Resilience) and happiness (Joy).
